Domaine des Comtes Lafon

Pierre Lafon

In the Lafon family since 1865, Domaine des Comtes Lafon is one of Burgundy’s undisputed reference points — fourteen hectares across Meursault, Volnay, Monthélie and Chassagne-Montrachet, farmed biodynamically, with every premier cru in Meursault among its holdings and a sliver of Montrachet as its crown jewel.

Dominique Lafon rebuilt the domaine’s fortunes from 1985 and, at the end of 2021, handed the reins to his nephew Pierre — the fifth generation to carry the family name into a new era.

The Domaine

The domaine and its walled monopole Clos de la Barre sit in the heart of Meursault. Jules Lafon, Dominique’s great-grandfather, assembled the estate’s greatest parcels — including the Montrachet purchased in 1918 and the deep holdings of Volnay-Santenots.

In the Vines

Dominique banned synthetic products in 1992, began organic conversion in 1995, and certified the whole estate biodynamic in 1998 — a pioneer alongside Anne-Claude Leflaive and Lalou Bize-Leroy. Vines average forty years; yields have averaged 35 hl/ha over the past decade.

In the Cellar

The winemaking changes little from cru to cru — the terroir does the talking. Only Montrachet sees entirely new oak; the premiers crus age sixteen months in 25 to 40 percent. Cold cellars keep fermentations slow, and lees-stirring is rare.
